As St. Louis home remodeling professionals, one of our core beliefs at Liston Design Build is that our clients should love where they live. This means designing spaces for everyday life — as well as the special moments and celebrations which truly make you feel at home. There are so many reasons to gather together, from throwing a birthday or graduation party to hosting a wedding shower or holiday dinner!

No matter what stage of life you are in, your home and its spaces should fit your family’s needs. Whether you are looking to reimagine your current entertaining areas, taking on a lower level remodel, or building an addition to provide the gathering space you need, we know how to achieve a custom look that unites form and function. Here are a few proven tips to elevate your home’s entertaining spaces.

Ideas for a Home Entertainment Area

Tip #1: Indoors to Outdoors

Your entertaining space can be so much more than inside the walls of your home. There are opportunities to enjoy relaxing pool days, late night bonfires, and outdoor garden parties all year round in St. Louis. A great starting point for your home design is to consider the flow from the indoors to the outdoors, and to make sure both areas are designed to accommodate your family and guests comfortably.

Our custom home project at Barkley Place seamlessly transitions from the inside to outdoor living — both on the main and lower level. The main level features an expansive covered, screened in porch with an outdoor dining area just off of the kitchen, as well as an outdoor gathering room. Below, large glass doors on the lower level open up to the pool deck, complete with an outdoor bar and patio area perfect for poolside barbecues.

This home now offers many options to host an intimate gathering or a party for a crowd, offering the comfort and flexibility that a busy family needs.

Tip #2: Functional and Intentional

To accommodate groups of different sizes and the variety of gatherings your family will host, your home’s entertainment areas need to be functional and intentional. This can be accomplished in many ways.

The kitchen at our Lay Road project is one example of a multi-use space, featuring:

  • A large island for prep area and seating
  • An oversize gas range with a pot filler, for a true gourmet chef’s kitchen
  • Dedicated bar area with its own sink and refrigerator
  • Storage space under the island and inside the custom, floor to ceiling cabinetry

With quality craftsmanship and thoughtful design, a functional space can be one that is also elegant and visually appealing — serving as a social space where guests can mingle. Your kitchen is the heart of your home, and this inspiration can be carried to every room.

Tip #3: Zones Create Purpose

Open floor plans are desirable because they make indoor areas feel more spacious. However, it is important to create defined zones within an open floor plan to provide the function you need. Achieve this by using interior features to create focal points that ground the space.

Our project at Bon Hill Drive showcases many different zones: from a bar to the exercise room to multiple seating areas. Every space serves a purpose and is visually defined within the open floor plan. For example, the bar area in the lower level has a brick backsplash that contrasts with the cream colored walls. The gathering area opposite from the bar centers around the fireplace with built-in shelving on both sides. This creates a focal point with warm wood and cozy textures to complement the brick and metal of the bar. In this way, both areas are thoughtfully designed to feel visually cohesive and harmonious — everything you want in an entertaining space.
